Having just rebuilt the heads 3 months ago to stop the smoking coming out of the exhaust pipe. A bit of smoke after rebuild but slowly went away after burning of oil in manifold. Just today, it start blowing smoke again. Now what, I figure it's the rings but cylinders looked great, only has 78k miles on it. Any suggestions.

Pull the plugs and take alook, maybe it's just one cyl that's the culprit

Could be rings, could also be something else. What color smoke? May be a rich mixture and plug fouling, or valve seals (did they put in good viton seals?) etc. Pull plugs and check them, do a leakdown and compression test while plugs are out.

Rebuilt heads myself, most of oil was coming from the #5 cylinder. Replaced seals, didn't replace valve guide though. It did smoke for a bit after starting after rebuild but figured it was oil left in manifold burning off which seems right because it did stop smoking. Told the owner when I started the rebuild, should do a complete rebuilt minus splitting the case but he wanted it done on the cheap. Best I let him make the decision what he wants done. I can do it in less than 5 days once getting the parts. He wants to sell it ASAP but not with it smoking. So what do you think, all new guides and rings....anything else?

Do a compression and leak down test. A lot of abuse can be made in a couple months especially if the engine isn't fueled properly.

Sounds like the owner needs a mechanic to me.
