Need some help experts.....
 
Still working on this slow 2.2S build. Bought fan/alt/schroud from a fellow Pelican. Every thing looked great except the fan sticks out to far, pully does line up with the crank pully.....Is the Altenator to big, its a SEV MARCHAL with numbers 14/70, 712 330 02 ,6 51. Youre alternator is too large. There was a change in 75 to a larger alternator and the fan housing, where the alternator sits, became finish size 19mm from, trying to remember, about 25mm.
Change alternators to the earlier unit so it fits what you have or get a later fan housing. Replacing the alternator is the less expensive way to go.

And do a search on Pelican for this alternator depth vs fan housing machined depth. Someone posted a chart showing the variables so you can measure ahead of time to see if you have matching parts.

If your fan strap is original to the fan housing, you have an early housing. The earlier, less powerful, alternator was shorter. A more powerful alternator is going to be longer, but the crank pulley and the fan housing mounting to the case have stayed the same. So Porsche just machined the fan housing deeper as the alternators got more powerful.

It looks like you have the fan fully seated on the alternator shaft. If it isn't, that would move things in the right direction. That looks like the original fan pulley half - it has big holes, which you use to hold things while you tighten the nut. Later alternators took a pulley half with more but smaller holes, and you need a spanner-like tool to hold the pulley half for tightening.

I've not had problems mixing pulley halves with fans, but you have to be careful with your belt size, and it makes sense to consider the ratio effects, about which there has been plenty of discussion also here. Looks like you have the original crank pulley, which is a smaller size that later motors have, so it would go with that pulley half, so that part should be good.

Looking at the photos, the problem is your alternator is too large to seat in the fan housing. If you know someone with a Lathe (or machine shop), you can remove some material from the fan housing to allow the alternator to fully seat. The fan should be inside the fan housing not flush to the edge.

Thanks for the quick responce Flat6pac, Walt Fricke and thumbdoctor. I found the 911 Fan/Shroud/Alt data sheet. Yup, alt to big. I have a shroud depth of 86mm and a alternator lenght of 123mm....should be 114mm for my shroud.To bad, the alt really looks nice with like new brushes. I'll look for some one to trade with.
