				Alternator Question

I'm about to re-start my engine after a rebuild (95 993). I re-connected the battery and noticed the alternator light on the dash came on (without key in ignition). What does this mean?

To me it means the alt is grounding the sense wire. Could be the alt itself...or the wiring going to it...but in any case..it is not correct. Try disconnecting the alt wires...one at a time to see if the light goes out. It could still be inside the alt...perhaps the diodes have corroded and shorted....or maybe the slip rings. Bob

This is strange. Prior to the rebuild I put in a new voltage regulator and the alternator worked fine. Maybe there is a short in the wiring harness.

Just an update, FWIW. Took out the alternator. Inspected the wiring harness and found all the insulation had cracked off all 3 wires near the end. Electrical taped the wires, re-installed and Alternator light went out. Now, once the car is running I will get the Wiring Harness recall performed at P dealer. | ||
