I cut the front fuel lines.....how to tell which is return
Yep, I cut them both off:eek:
I have a fuel leak in one of the lines and was just going to replace the rubber ends. Is there an easy way to tell which line is which? I was thinking of loosening the fuel filter and blowing air in the lines. Anyone ever done this? |
Is the fuel pump in working order?
Did you try clicking the ignition on for few seconds and see which hose the fuel comes out of?Put the fuel line ends in appropriate containers, have assistant turn key while you observe? |
yes fuel pump works but I cut the fuel line that goes to it.
|
where did you cut it?Between the tank and the pump?
|
I cut them after the fitting on the plastic line.
|
Sorry obvious after last post you did cut tank to pump lines. My car is a 1970 and i dont think my fuel delivery system will be of much help if this is for your 84 targa.I am sure someone in the know will chime in
|
The line that comes out of the bottom/center of the fuel tank is the one that goes to the fuel pump. I think the return line goes in on the left side of the tank. Don't know where the fuel pump is in your car to tell you which line goes where from there.

I'm sorry, I didn't explain very well. I know the hoses between the pump and the tank. My issue is with the ones coming through the tunnel from the rear of the car. Both of the lines look the same now that I have cut their respective fittings off.

Go to the front of the car, look for the line coming off the fuel pump, this is your pressure side, follow the line were it goes into the tunnel, just behind the steering rack. Mark it with something, go to the back of the car and note the position of both fuel lines, also marking them for reference. Go back to the front of the car, pull about 1/2 inch forward on the pressure line, they will slide in the rubber grommets. Go back to the rear of the car and note what line moved forward, this is your P-side and the other is your R-side. A little shot of WD-40 on the grommets help the lines slide.

:)
Here's a shot of the rear lines exiting the tunnel......... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388148256.jpg The line on the right side is normally the feed, the one on the left side is normally the return. Unless......someone has switched them during a replacement. These fittings are M14 Male Euro Flare and are permanent to the Polyamid tunnel lines. What exactly did you cut off? The rear hardlines (911SC or Carrera) can simply be disconnected from the tunnel lines. Len :) |
I cut the front lines as they came out of the tunnel. I have since figured it out and am back on the road.
Thanks |
:)
Glad you figured it out yourself as I was getting confused trying to follow this. Just so others may understand the layout, at the front the original lines look like this......... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388182504.jpg I expect you cut back the crimp sleeve and the rubber hose like this......... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388182601.jpg and replaced it with new E-85 rated fuel injection hose and proper Norma or Oetiker type hose clamps. Len :) |
That is exactly what I did. I just cut them both at the same time.
Sorry for all the confusion. |
