Rebuild resources in Richmond, VA?

I'm about to start the rebuild of my 82 SC engine after years of on-and-off research...I have at least one broken head stud and I'm going to build something like a 3.3 motor for street (daily driver) use with occasional track (DE) time. I've found some good resources far away for new P&Cs, new heads if necessary, and other components, but I'd like to know if anyone knows of some good local (within about 100 miles of Richmond) places that can do some of the machine work and parts cleaning. I'd like to use a Porsche specialist, and hopefully a place that is on par with many of the places I see recommended all over Pelican but always seem to be in CA, FL, or other far-away places...I can always ship the parts to one of those places, but it would be nice to be able to see the shop and people doing the work, too. I'd also like it to be a place that doesn't mind working with a customer rebuilding their own engine. I'd also like to know if anyone locally has some of the special tools, like the engine stand adapter, cam timing tools, etc. that they'd be willing to rent me. Thanks in advance, Olivier

Thanks...I will look into those. I've heard of Lufteknic but never been there...ASG is a new one for me. John, do you know if Lufteknic has their own machine shop?

I too am in the Richmond area and could use the cam timing tools for an upcoming repair. If you made any progress on finding the tools please let me know. Thanks and good luck with your project!

Lutzo at LMN Motorsports in Virginia Beach is fair, honest, and excellent, 757-233-0558 . I know it's a drive, but more than worth it. R/Dave

Thanks for all the tips. I'm definitely willing to drive an hour or two to take my parts to a good shop, and ASG and LMN are both in range. I left a message with Lutzo Friday and I'm waiting to hear back...does anyone know if LMN or ASG does their own machine work for a pretty basic rebuild? I also stopped by Lufteknic on Friday to try to see the shop and talk to someone, but didn't really get past the front desk...they said they do "some work" in house and gave me Robert's card but said he was busy on the phone and I should send him an e-mail...not a great sign but I will see what they can do...it didn't look like they had a full machine shop in there and I wonder who they send parts to... I've seen a few shops that send their parts to Ballos Precision Machine, but there are at least a couple of bad experiences out there...has anyone here used them or Laurel Machine for Porsche-specific work?

Olivier, I have a specialist I use here in the DC area who I would sum up as excellent and completely professional. Look him up here on the board, he is full of knowledge and always seems to find a solution to my cars needs. His name is Matt De Maria Stuttgart Performance Engineering

Abacus (Abacus Racing | Virginia Beach and Norfolk Machine Shop, Exotic Car Repair Shop, and Dyno Services located in Hampton Roads) racing and machine in Virginia Beach. Call Lutzo at LMN, he won't be too busy to talk to you. Or better yet, drive to VaBeach and see his operation. I had the same experience as you did at Lufteknic. R/Dave
