3.0 Carrera motor rebuild

Hi, I am looking at rebuilding me 3.0L

I am looking at doing the work myself over a fairly long time period. You know a bit here a bit there.
Just wondering what kind of expense I am looking at if everything is in fairly good order but needs a general refurbish. Ie. the crank isn't kaput or anything like that.

Cheers, Will

Anywhere from the price of new gasket sets to a full rebuild in the thousands of dollars.
You won't know what needs to be done until you have it apart and inspect and measure.

Thanks Timmy2
Judging by what I have read in other rebuild threads I think I am looking at 4-10k to be safe.

There are plenty of "gotcha" areas.

Cylinder heads service: ~$1000
Gaskets: ~$400

If your cylinders need replacement or refurbishment then things snowball quickly so it's wise to budget for it ahead of time so you aren't over a barrel. I allowed a surplus of $2500 over my spreadsheet of regular items that I ate up easily on powder coating, new valve covers, cleaners, coatings, brushes, broken/leaking sensors, hydraulic tensioners, Porsche specific tools etc...

I'm into my 2.4 rebuild for about $6k so far. I think it will reach about $8k. Everything has not gone well. P/C's were shot. Heads? Atrocious but I knew this. Crank was out of spec. Ever looked at oversized bearing for 911 engines? Through the roof! It was cheaper to source a STD crank and they aren't cheap anymore. So, I've had to get heads done, source within-spec crank and have prepped and polished, recondition rods and rockers, have the case worked over by Ollies, and sourced new P/C's from Supertec. New bearings for all case internals, head studs, gasket set and various sundries from our host... Still need cams ground and MFI pump recalibrated.

I know you won't know much until you get it torn down. Have a plan. And, get Wayne's book and Bruce's performance book.

Thanks. The more you all say the worse its sounding.
I did order Wayne's book just last night so I'll do plenty if reading before making a move on cracking the case.

Will
