There is no difference between an L and Normale 68 aluminum case Henry. So why the L designation? Still a hard to find case for 68.

Serial number....that's it. These cars are so valuable now that coming up with a close engine number is the next best thing to matching numbers.

I see...Still a 68 aluminum case of any type is a pretty rare bird.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
308 0047 serial with a 901/01 designation number ( the 901/01 was as error, it is actually 901/06)
I have heads, intermediate shaft, cam towers and chain boxes as well.

I also have a sand cast case that has a casting mark of 64.

The type # should be 901/06. Do you have a photo of the type # and the build # also please?

The 11/64 date code on engine 901238 is interesting; they cast a lot of engine cases in 1964 by the looks of things.

Aluminum Case

I have a '66 911, would it have had an aluminum case? When did Porsche go to the mag case? Currently running a 2.2. Bob Shafer

Yes, absolutely; the change to mag case was in 1968 model year. What VIN & paint code does it have? I can guess the serial range.
