930 oil pump inlet pipe issues
 

I cleaned my 930 oil pump last summer. I am just now getting around to the build.

So tonight I built up the crank after measuring clearances. Next step was to get the oil pump wiped down in prep for bolting in the case tomorrow.

The oil inlet tube had a brownish red sealant where it is pressed into the housing. This material is all cracked and flaking off. It is really hard. and I am glad this did not go into the motor.

What is the best way to replace this edge sealant? Would JB Weld or similar epoxy work?

I just epoxied the base of the tube while I was covering the oil galleys in the case. Done and installed.

Sorry I missed this. I would have suggested same, as JB Weld or 3M Hysol is oil resistant.

Note that whoever makes the pump for Porsche must have recognized this issue because the later pumps like Carrera, 964, 993, GT3 and the current 930 replacement (996TT) all have the scavenge pipe screwed onto the pump housing with a flange & o-ring.

First picture is a 993 pump. Pumps in the second picture are as follows. From the top:

1. Early AL pump used up through '68
2. 3 rib Mg pump used from around '69 through '75
3. 4 rib Mg pump incorporated in '76 with the oil bypass mod in the case
4. SC 4 rib Al pump used on the 78-83.5 SC's same as the Mg 4 rib pump but more resistant to wear
5. 3.2 Carrera pump which is the same as the SC pump but with a built in strainer designed to work with the no sump crankcase used from late '83-'89
6. 964 pump which is longer and requires the short layshaft connector

Thanks Kevin for the vote of confidence. I wanted to use Hysol but I did not have any on hand. JB Weld was the next best thing.

The "repaired" pump is in the now sealed up case. On to PC installation. Hoping to have a complete longblock by next week.
