964 Ground Crankshaft with Main Bearings

I have a stock crankshaft from a 1993 C2 that had the mains and rod journals ground .25mm ( 10 thousandth inch). The work was done by Moldex Crankshaft in Michigan in 2007; they were recommended by Bruce Anderson. They do work for NASCAR and custom race cranks.

The crank was ground, nitrided, magnafluxed and polished. When Moldex returned the crank they recommended it should not be used for more than 500 HP (the 964 crank is also used in some turbo engines). Since then the crank has been sprayed with CRC corrosion inhibitor, wrapped in paper and plastic, sealed in a wooden box and stored under a guest bed. I checked recently and it still looks and smells (CRC) good.

The crank was in the engine when a connecting rod bearing failure scattered debris and prompted a full rebuild. My indy shop avoids ground or welded cranks, especially in track cars. Fortunately we found a good used crank.

One problem with grinding the main journals has been the big price premium for the oversized bearings. I recently was given access to a full set of Glyco main bearings sized for the ground journals at a good discount. These bearing are not sourced through Porsche.

I have been thinking of offering a package deal of the ground crank plus the Glyco bearings for $1250/offers.

This package may appeal to someone rebuilding a street engine who is willing to assume some risk to compensate for the cost savings with the ground crank and bearings not supplied through Porsche.

If anyone is interested please PM me.

Thanks
