Case imperfection - leave alone or JB Weld?
 

Just got my case and crank back from the machine shop, I noticed this little imperfection in the case below the thermostat housing. Should I put a little JB Weld over the area or just leave it be?

I seal it with epoxy. Some of the early 3.0 liter cases leaked from this area.

Thank you Aaron, i figured just closing it up would be good to prevent any further chips from coming off it too. Thanks.

I have a dollop of grey epoxy on the outside in the same place on my 3.0. I never busted the case open, just a top end 15 years ago so I don't know what it looks like on the inside.

I have seen other threads where folks ask about an epoxy seal "plug" on the outside.

If your garage is heated, use the regular JB Weld (you knew that) and keep it warm all night to give it a good cure. End of this week is supposed to be warmer.

I did all the outside areas indicated in the rebuild manual plus filled in the webbing per the Porsche Tech Bulletin..

GaryR, Can you please describe the "filled the webbing per the Porsche Tech Bulletin.." I can't seem to find the details on it. Thanks David

That is in a different area than where my internal issue was of course, but both are thin casting material over steel inserts.

Woah, a Porsche Technical article recommending use of RTV...that'll blow some minds....

The general consensus is to fill the area with JB Weld now, but I agree, RTV doesn't seem like a great idea...

As long as the exterior area indicated in the Tech bulletin is sealed, the interior will not create any leakage. My only concern would be if sealed internally, if that came loose it could damage the engine.

Does this issue apply to only the early 3.0L Al cases? I am starting a top-end rebuild on an 2.4L Mg case, and wanted to know if I should seal this area as well.

It applies to pretty much all air cooled engine cases because they all have the same "J" pipe that runs up the side of the case to the large bore on top of the case
