964 cam choices
Hi guys,
I have my 1992 3.6 engine in pieces at my mechanic right now. The parts mostly look amazing for 130000 miles, and 5 cylinders still only had 0-2 % leakdown. Unbelivable quality in these cars. Unfortunately the engine leaked the oil out faster than I could fill it :) and cyl no 3 had a 80 % leakdown due to a burnt exhaust valve. The cams have some very minor pitting, and they need to be refreshed or replaced. So, I wanted to ask if there is a better cam choice for a 964 street engine, where I still can retain the Motronic (but maybe change the chip)? Please let me know. Regards, Johan |
I'd say unless you're going with something that is more track oriented, your best bet is to stick with a stock cam. If your goal is to simply add a few extra bhp, your call really should be to 911chips.com. Awesome reviews, easy install, immediate gains in horsepower and reasonably priced. The chip can be customized if needed, what's not to like? Do some searching on cams, the advantages of going with a hopped up cam might be what you had in mind but the way it changes your car's behavior may not be as you expect thus making it not a desirable upgrade.

Johan, from your description, it sounds like you will renew the cams even if you stick with the stock grind. Good idea, because the pitting will only get worse and cause troubles you don't want. Nothing money won't cure!

Thanks guys, great advice! Sounds like I should stay with refurbished stock cams then....
Magnus, how did they solve that? Filled it up wth ethanol? Johan |

We rebuilt a 1992 964 and had WebCams in CA do a 20-21 cam grind that is a torque
cam grind. It turned out great -- and with a Steve Wong tuned chip produces good HP and Tq . We did a few other things to the engine also . . . :D Regards, Porsche 964 Cold Start Idle After Steve Wong Chip 11-25-2012 Video by Arizona-ed | Photobucket |
