Best IMS repair kit?
I have been urging a friend with an 04 911 turbo to think about doing some preventative maintenance and get the questionable bearing replaced. Although the car has very low miles, about 19K, it seems like a good investment. Who makes the best kit to retrofit the bearing? There are a lot of them out there, and he wants to do it once.
Thanks, Bill |

Thanks Andy! That is why I read this forum, to be educated....my pal and I both know more now than we did before! (which isn't saying a whole lot)

Eagledriver's bang-on....although I have heard of RMS (Rear Main Seal) issues on both the M096 (Carrera based engines, Boxsters, etc) and the Mezger units....wouldn't swear to it, so would encourage you to research further, but if there is some Prev Maint to be done there, it's a hell of a lot simpler than the IMS issue (on M096's)....certainly the M096 and M097 engines can have bad RMS's, and it *could* be that the RMS problem on Mezger engines maybe affected the 997 generation cars. Certainly when I was shopping for my 996 GT3 (before the 997GT3 was available), RMS was never mentioned for that generation.
The RMS is basically just the oil seal at the back of the crank where it exits the crankcase halves (flywheel end)...there have been many versions of an official Porsche installation tool (that will set the seal at different depths) and IIRC, the seal itself. Inspection can tell you whether you have a weeping seal or not....if you have, worst it can do is contaminate the clutch on the manual cars (assuming you don't lose SO much that you run the levels low!). It has been known that a small weep can be lived-with until it's new clutch time anyway. Anyway, just socialising that one with you, please do more research.....the intervening years and other aircooled projects do dim ones memory somewhat!
