How to Remove stuck pistons and cylinders
 

I took the advice of a few on the board here and just split the cylinders. I never thought I would disassemble an engine with an angle grinder. :) Penetrants and heat didn't work and were a waste of time. The pistons look like they might be reusable but we'll see. The cylinders looked like they may have been in good shape before the engine was stored. A couple of pistons were pretty stiff on the pins but that could have been from sitting too. I'm trying to figure out what this engine was pulled and sat. Can you buy reasonably priced aftermarket cylinders or am I better off just to buy a complete p&c set? Its a stock 2.2E.

Yes, you can buy new sets of P/C's. They can range in price with AA's starting at $600 to new Mahles coming in upwards of $4000. It really depends on what you want to do.

Consider giving Henry Schmidt a call.

I guess I'd reserve judgment until you had them all cleaned up but I think you'll find between the corrosion and wear, those pistons are toast.

If I look at AA prices the p&c kit costs $150 more than the bare cylinders. It hardly makes sense to save the stock pistons although the listed AA compression ratios are either too low or too high.

Damn...I wish I had seen this problem before you split them.
I have used Coca-Cola in the past to loosen up pistons.
Some of those were straight 4's and 6's left to rust for 40 - 50 years.
It still amazes me that we drink that stuff and our insides don't turn to mush!
The worst one I had was a model T engine left in a field with the plugs removed...it took more than a dozen tries...but finally got them out (soak for 2 -3 days....tap down on the top of the piston).
I would not have done it...but the owner wanted that particular block saved.

Matt ... you would be surprised how much liquid gets in there to do the job.
BTW ... I see you are in Edmonton ... the car (and engine) i described were from just outside Medicine Hat ... on the way down to Suffield.
There were hundreds of cars parked out in the field ... it seemed as if he had parked them in rows of 30's...31's...32's...etc.
The 32 my friend salveged was all there...and even now is one of his prized possesions today.
