intermediate shaft gear

I'm replacing the aluminum gear on the intermediate shaft in my 69 E. The new gear has 6 bolt holes instead of the original 3 bolts and 3 pins. My machinist tells me that the shaft is heat treated hard and can't be drilled and tapped to add the other 3 bolts. What is the best way to solve this problem? Thanks, Kevin

shaft

One way to solve it is to replace the assembly with a new 6 bolt version, I have a complete new shaft with a 0 alu gear for sale in the parts for sale. Ken
