Broken head studs
 

So, I pulled my 3.0 and replaced it with a 2.7 so I could fix some oil leaks. With the motor on the stand I could hear parts clinking when I turned the engine upside down. Pulled the bottom valve covers and BAM! Look what I found! 4 on the right bank and two on the left bank. I assume this is a bad thing. The engine ran like a top so this really surprised me. I am still learning about Porsche engines and haven't torn one down yet. My question is, how difficult is this to fix and can it be done in my garage? I have good mechanical skills.

Tear down and rebuild can be done in your garage if you are reasonably competent. The engine is fairly basic in design but full of odd design philosophy compared to more traditional engine layouts. Don't worry too much about the horror stories you read on this forum about engine rebuilding. Most will be straight forwards.

You do have to pull it all the way down to short block. Hope none are broken to case level, then the shop needs to be involved, and things get more expensive.
Do a valve job on The heads.
Now, do you want to know if the bottom has been opened?
Is your crank standard, is the centerline leaking?

I have read a lot of horror stories about splitting the case so I don't know if I am up for that but I would have the heads done while they are off. I will take your advise flat6 and buy the gasket set.

Does everyone agree that there is no need to split the case? The motor is from a 1981 SC rollover with only 65,000 miles.

The agreement could only be if you have no other problems screaming at you.
No massive oil leaks, good leak dwn numbers, ETC

We'll you don't want to be grinding out a short broke stud with the case opened. The shop will want to handle just the half if the break is below level.

If you have even a little above the case to grab on to get some serious heat. Most lock tight epoxy stuff lets go at around 600 deg.
