Machine Shop Recommendations for Southeast?
I'm in upstate South Carolina and would appreciate any good references in the area (SC, NC, GA, TN). Looking for someone capable of all the usual 911 requirements. If no one in a drivable distance, who are your favorites elsewhere? I'm a relative noob, so customer service/hand-holding ability will be valuable to me.

JB racing is all that I can think of right now close to you. The east coast is getting more and more pcar machine shops but most seem to be located in the northeast. There are plenty of pcar shops in the south that would be able to tell you where they sub out there machine work. I had my heads done by Bob @ Anchor Atlantic in southern NJ. Great work and turn around. What work are you looking for?

I asked this same question a while back. You'd think there would be something in Nashville, Atlanta or maybe Charlotte but I haven't heard of any. I ended up just shipping my heads to AA and case to Ollies. Truth be told, it could all have gone to Ollies. Heads got new guides, seals and new valves all around due to past machine work and now look like works of art. The case was decked, line bored, case savers for head studs and trans mounts and oil bypass mod. I'm a noob doing all this and rather than screw around, I just bit the bullet and went to the well known experts. Customer service with both businesses was great and I'm happy with the product so far. Heads are still packaged. I spec'ed the mains last night with plasigage and everything was spot on STD.
The rest I had done at a local race shop: Rods trued, rebushed and balanced, rockers rebushed and polished, and the crank balanced and polished. Local shop was more expensive but without shipping, it was a bargain. Only complaint with the local shop was that the rocker bushings were a tad narrow according to Wayne's book but I probably wouldn't have noticed were it not for my OCD. The bushings are still proud of the casting so I don't think it's an issue. Good luck and budget be damned! |
JB Racing in Talavarus, FL Alex Job Racing is across the street from them... Extreme Cylinder heads is also in FL...
I have not heard of ANY good machine shops in the Atlanta area that I would use for a Porsche.... |
+ for JB Racing in Tavares, FL. They did all the machine work on my 2.2 rebuild and upgrade.

JB has a long relationship with AJR, like decades long.
If you want someone closer to home call Autometrics. There's also Robert at Lufteknic in Virginia. Don't know if either shop will share their "sources" but they can assist you in getting the job done right, even if they take a cut. You are in NASCAR country. I imagine if you shot a .22 in any direction you might hit a machine shop that is qualified. But have they worked on Porsche's that's another question. But TRG didn't run an annex in NC without having people they could work with. Keep digging. There's probably someone none of us have heard of that can do the job and do it right. |
As far as I know, local shops outsource their machine work as well (to the typical shops). So, not sure you're going to find something in NC.
There is a guy in Aiken that I think does some machine work and is a long time Porsche guy. I'd have to look his name up. Todd |
JB racing. has always been my go to guys.
