Another 1980 SC Rebuild (Webers, SSI, Crank Fire)

Greetings All,

I thought I had rebuilt my last air cooled engine with this project:

Another 3.6->3.8 Rebuild Thread...

That project spawned a few interesting threads:

The Complete Engine Sealant Thread...

964->993 On Case Oil Filter?

Sealing Case "Experiment" (so YOU don't have to!)

Well, after this adventure I moved on the water cooled platform (987S and now 996TT).

But just when you think you are out, they pull you back in...

I good friend started an engine rebuilt on a 1980 SC engine that had recently been redone with hotter cams and valve relieved pistons. An unfortunate gear selection bent the valves and he decided to return it to stock. All the machine work was done and parts cleaned but then he lost interest. That was a few years ago. He wanted to sell the car and engine apart, but I asked him if I could get it running again. So here we are, another air cooled rebuild.

The end result will be a nice stock long block with some minor bolt on go fast (or at least sound like it) goodies:

Weber 46IDA3Cs (yes, it might run better with 40's but this is what we have)
Crank Fire Ignition
SSI's & Sport Muffler

This will be a "Complete rebuild" - all bearings will be new, new intermediate shaft, rockers redone, heads redone, pistons rebored and bushed, new rings and so on. I have all the parts and the machine work is done.

How hard can it be?

So come and join the fun on "Another 1980 SC Rebuild"

I realize this thread is worthless without pics, so here are a few:

Yes - it is dirty now!

Yes, the oil pump bolts are incorrect and missing locks!

This is where the motor is going back - home!

Quick Update - cleaned the case last weekend - such fun - and ordered a new internal stud for the flywheel end bearing (it was bent), and a dowel pin for the nose bearing (I just can't seem to keep these around). Hopefully this weekend is short block assembly time.

I might have some Wrightwood Racing o-rings for these thru bolts - time to dig into the cold storage from 2007...

Chris, what cams are going in? I'm thinking about a carb engine for the SC.

While I am staying with the stock SC cams so that CIS can be bolted back on if desired, a better cam with stock pistons might be the 964 cam, although I have not tried this combination personally. If you are willing to notch the stock pistons, I have a set of carburetor only cams by Harry Hall that work well.
