911 Engine identification
Hello,
I am in the process of ordering parts for my 911 rebuild. I am a bit confused about what my engine is. I need to know if it is aluminium or magnesium. I think it is a 911 1976 magnesium, although has been molested at some stage through it;s like and has had some work done. Engine number is: 6362981 Case numbers are : 930.101.103.4R and 930.101.104.4R Fan housing number is: 930.106.101.0R Is it a 2.7L or a 3.0L I am a bit confused, engine number states it is a 1976 2.7 magnesium??, although my mechanic is inclined to think it is a 3.0 aluminium case. He said this because of the case number and my head studs broke clean and did not pull (more common with the magnesium cases). Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1404129443.jpg |
According ti to Red Book, the engine came from a Chassis Serial 9116300001-->9116301868, 911 RoW
Engine Type 911/81, 2.7 Liter 8.5:1 Compression Ratio K-Jetronic 165 HP @ 5800 rpm. A 3 Liter were fitted that year but the Engine Serial started with 666XXXX. |
It looks like a 3.0 distributor with a green wire
Look inside the cap and see if there is points or pull the CD plug and see if you have 3 or 6 plug The case numbers are for aluminum You need to look behind the oil pressure sender and see the engine type number on the flat ie. 930/03 or 911/83, etc Bruce |
Looks like an early 3.0 SC engine with the 225mm fan (non of those were ever used on a 2.7).

More Photos for Identification
Check out some more photos i have taken as requested today.
I have a 6 pin CDI box, 3 pin voltage regulator. Engine case number is : 930/06 What is throwing me off is the cam tower #: 901.105.111.1R Engine number states it is 2.7 ROW, case number states its 78/79 3.0?? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1404184553.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1404184567.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1404184587.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1404184614.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1404184628.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1404184646.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1404184668.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1404184687.jpg |
The 901 cam carriers are a fact into the 3.0 for some production. They are 4 bearing carriers.
You have a 3.0. The injection runner has the correct nut holding it in place. The fan is the smaller of 78/79 series Bruce |
You got a mix probably from a rebuild:
Engine Serial: 2.7 (1976) for an engine type 911/81 (6362981) Engine Type: 3L (1978/79) that should have a serial of 6580001-on (California) (930/06) |
Piston Rings
So i would classify the engine parts to order for years 1978-79??
What type of piston rings would be required could someone please explain what i would need. i.e.. 3mm, 3.5mm and standard 4mm.. |
Count the fins on the cylinders
10 is alucil, dont rering 11 is Mahle, so you need 78/79 Mahle rings Talk to the salesman so you get rings for the application. Bruce |
When you get your engine apart, just measure the rings before ordering. You can confirm Alusil (magnet won't stick to inner cylinder surface) vs Nikasil (magnet will stick).
But how would the stamped engine number end up not being proper for the case number (and the case casting number, as well as the direction the distributor rotates, the fact that it is a reluctor and not a points system, etc etc)? |

one of the things I like about these engines is the interchangeability of components. 3 bearing cam towers on a later engine, swapping distributor gears on cranks to match the dizzy I want to use, shrouds, cams, pistons, you name it. I've swapped it all. I've found 906 pistons in a '69 T case, with Solex cams. as time goes on finding a completely stock configuration engine will become the exception. short answer is: tear it down and see what you have. |
