Help identify engine specs

Can someone help me identify or point me to a good reference regarding my engine? The engine code starts with 637, it is reportedly a 911S 2.7L, but European Spec. I am trying to find out how this differs from the US spec.

Thomas,

The only accurate way to ID your engine is by having the type numbers and serial numbers that are stamped on the case.

The former is found next to where the right side cam oil line is and looks like this: 911/xx with the last two digits being the key ones.

The latter one is stamped on the left side fan housing support.

With those numbers, I can tell you precisely what you have, assuming that it has never been modified.

Ahhh,..perfect.

You have a '76 49-state, 2.7 with 165 BHP. This engine was used all over North America except California. I believe Euro 2.7S CIS cars used the same engine from '75-'77.

Well the infamous RED book got your serial # as type 911/81 which would be fitted to RoW 911 but has your type (911/82) as per Steve posting.

But except for the "air pump" the description is the same!!! So I suspect the RED book might be wrong again...
