Lighter 3,0 valves -maybe Ti
 

Hello guys,

i am looking for some lighter Valves for a hot rod 3,0 engine. At this point I am not sure if standart size (49/41,5) or bigger. I talked to del west. They can make them individual but don´t have them ready. I am sure I have read about people selling them here in the past. But I cannot remember who this were. Any ideas who is selling Ti valves with 9mm valve steam?

You'll need beryllium-copper seats for them to last and those are not cheap to install.

If you do go with the Beryllium-Copper seats...please resist the urge to run your finger around them to see how smooth they are.
Beryllium is poisonous!!!
If it gets into your blood...you are not going to like the result.
A lot of military electronic equipment has thin springy fingers of the stuff on panels to make sure the panel is "sealed" electronically (RF leakage).
We were cautioned very often about getting cut on this stuff.

Bob is spot-on; Berylllium is VERY toxic (lethal) and we wear protective clothing & respirators when machining the seats during installation.

All this adds to the completed costs of using Ti valves.

Beryllium Poisoning is quite tricky.

Ingestion of Beryllium is not particularly dangerous and the metal is not poisonous in the traditional sense so it is relatively safe to touch and handle and Copper/Beryllium alloys have been used to make hand tools for use in hazardous areas for many years as the alloys develop good strength but are non-sparking.

The alloy is also used for the manufacture of a significant number of springs.

Beryllium containing alloys are used commonly in the Oil, Nuclear and Aerospace industries.

Where Beryllium is an issue is when fine particles of both the metal and its oxide are inhaled.

Once in the lungs it can be transported by the blood and can have other affects on the liver and other organs but this is uncommon. Its main danger is to the lungs and it can cause severe pneumonia like symptoms and is considered carcinogenic.

Machining Berylium does need some care and the use of high flow rates of coolant and I would always wear they type of respirators used in paint shops but it is not really dangerous to the touch.

Isn't it better to go with 8 mm stem valves of a more modern design and common alloy such as stainless?
Those are lighter and valve guide replacement are usually needed anyway.

Not sure. A friend fitted some non porsche valves from Manley I think. They were slightly larger so the seat had to be cut.
