2.2t - efi?

Hello,

presently have a '72 2.2T in my '74 with Webber 40's on it. Recently started collecting parts for a 3.2 swap+turbo, but it's looking like I might not have everything ready for spring. I've already got my engine management and intake (Haltech platinum sport 2000, and a 3.2 intake, fuel rails, and injectors, MSD ignition)

Is there much to be gained out of a 2.2T if I were to swap the carbs for the 3.2 intake and use the standalone ECU?

Much better driveability and gas mileage, assuming someone (yourself?) tunes it. Also probably a bit more power, just quessing it would be in the region of 10%...

You should also have better idle (w/ and w/o accessories), better start (cold, warm, and hot), safer operation at higher RPMs, and your car won't smell so strongly of gas. I'm laying out a plan to do the same with my '69 2.0T.

So far, I'm looking at MS3 with fully sequential coil near plug ignition and injection. The top side will be replaced with fuel rails, injector bodies, intake runners, and a plenum. The dizzy will also be replaced with a camshaft sensor and a 60-2 gear will be added to the crankshaft to control ignition timing.

911T cam is so mild that there will be no issues running it with common plenum intake..

Black,

What would be a better alternative for the T cam on a 2.0 or 2.2 that has been converted to EFI with a common plenum?

My plan was to fabricate a custom intake. It would have a single or dual plenum and throttle body (not decided yet). The intake runners would be equal length and sized for the smaller displacement engine.

Thanks for all the input! I am absolutely a beginner, all I've really done is regular maintenance for the most part, suspensions, brakes, oil changes, etc.

It absolutely would be a great idea for me to just pay a shop to do it, but this is a hobby for me, and I'm just doing it because I want to: for fun.

Being up here in western Canada, parts availability has been a PITA, looking more and more like I'll need to just have a motor shipped up from down south.
I'm just a bit excited to play with the new ECU I picked up. The initial idea was to keep the 2.2+webers on the shelf, and I've collected parts for an EFI conversion on a 3.2, but purchasing a good long block has been more time consuming than anticipated.

Some years ago we installed Megasquirt to a customers 2.2E engine and it was also done using custom common plenum. No issues whatsoever, car ran like a charm.

So I would say go for it, but may not be worth it if you must make the 32mm vs 40mm intake difference to fit because you are not planning to keep the EFI on 2.2T, right?

Correct, I'm only considering using the 2.2 to test out the EFI for the fun of it until I find a 3.2 to build. I just have a garage full of EFI goodies, and it's tough not to play with them :)

I say leave it be. Enjoy your car while you get the 3.2 together. One project at a time. I spread myself too thin, get cars in pieces and then don't have anything to drive in the now.

1) There's an 8mm difference between intake ports on a 2.2T and a 3.2 engine (32mm vs 40mm).
2) 911T cams are designed for an individual throttle body intake (such as carbs), whereas the 3.2 intake manifold is common plenum and thus you will have an intake reversion problem.

is it ill advised to use manifold adapters? I thought it was pretty common for those doing EFI on a 930 to use something like the 32mm -> 42mm adapters?

TurboKraft Inc : Carrera Intake Manifold Adapter Set

Regarding the reversion problem, this refers to exhaust gasses entering the intake plenum due to the intake valve being open before the piston hits TDC? so ITBs might mitigate the issue of having exhaust gasses enter the common plenum, but with the Carrera intake, are the intake runners not about the same length as the carb+velocity stack? Are EFI/turbo cams ground to have the intake valves completely closed until TDC or something? (Pardon my ignorance)
