2.0 litre piston compatibility qn
Does anyone know if 2.0 litre pistons that were made to suit 2.2/2.4 heads will fit with original 2.0 heads without interference?
My assumption is that they would - but that there would be a compression ratio drop due to the higher dome of the 2.0 heads vs the shallower dome of the 2.2/2.4 heads. |
I had some made last year that have the dome and pockets to suit 2.2 heads with an 81mm diameter. They had the same dome as the 2.2S piston.
I have never tried to put them into an engine with a 2.0 head but I think that the compression would be quite low and I am not sure how you could resolve this easily. |
The only way to really tell is assemble one piston and head and measure the combustion chamber (with the piston at TDC) by adding light oil thru the spark plug hole with a burette. Add that number to the volume of the cylinder (1/6 of engine displacement) and divide by the combustion chamber volume to get your actual compression.

Thanks guys - the plan is to do a test fit.
I was hoping someone might have tried it before and had a rough estimate of compression loss. The pistons were built to 10.5:1 so should hopefully come out at something pretty streetable with the 2.0 heads. |
Obrut,
As they say, "ask me how I know?" Been there , done that, but a little different than you. Your opening statements are a little ambiguous. What cylinder are you using, 2.0 or 2.2 (seems like 2.0). The sealing surface is not the same on the two engines. Seems like you are trying to use these pistons with 2.0 cylinders and 2.0 heads? If that is the case, I think you will be WAY down on compression. I put 2.2S pistons in my 2.0S motor back in 1983 (had to machine the heads), but I have never started the engine. Please see the post below, and especially post #6 from "edmayo" (knows what he is talking about). The difference here is that your engine will still be a 2.0 and mine will be a 2.2 (with about 33cc more displacement per cylinder than yours). Ed STILL thought that I would only have about 7.5:1 compression. I finally bit the bullet and bought a set of 2.2S heads that will go on the engine and make it pretty much a 2.2S motor. But in your case, even if you found some 2.2 heads, you would still be down on compression because the motor will still be 2.0 displacement. Bob B 2.0S to 2.2S |
Thanks Bob - I was asking the question because I have these surplus parts on the shelf, and that is where they will stay...
ps. And yes, I was planning to use 2.0 barrels and 2.0 heads. |
