1973 911E initial rebuild engine startup with MFI
 

I am looking for suggestions regarding best new rebuild engine start up.
I am going to complete the restoration of my 73 911E I purchased several years ago.
The car was not in running condition when I purchased it. The car came with it's original MFI system that had been replaced with Webers. I have rebuilt the Webers and I am going to have the MFI pump rebuilt as well as the throttle bodies and intake stakes. I am replacing the OE fuel pump as well as all filters and hoses.
As I said the engine is a fresh rebuild. I know there will be many unknowns and
"bugs" that will need to be addressed but realizing the importance of the first 20 minutes of running in the fresh engine my question is should I initially start the car with the Weber set up or use the fresh MFI system. Looking for a general consensus.

If the MFI is properly rebuilt and set up on your engine, I can't think of a reason why not to just run with that from the get go

I have zero experience with this but one day, I will. That said, Mr. Townsen makes good sense. The pump, if calibrated correctly, is set to go on a car in perfect tune. As yours is rebuilt, short of getting your ignition set right and the MFI pump in time, it should start tight up.

Thanks for the response. I did not know if anyone here could comment on their personal experience with a newly rebuilt MFI system on a newly rebuilt engine. Most likely I will use the injection set up. I will set the timing and thoroughly check out the ignition system prior to start up. I will also gather info from MFI Werks and Eurometrix since they will most likely be doing the MFI work. I have heard they are both very good at what they do.

I run a modified 911 motor with a recalibrated MFI pump in my 914 racecar. When I fired the engine up with everything freshly rebuilt including the MFI pump, the only issue I had was incorrectly orienting the MFI pump gear with respect to the cam drive (180 degrees off). Once I fixed that, it fired right up.

Set up the MFI correctly. Fire it up. Set the timing and let it run for 20 minutes at 1,000 RPM's. Turn it off, check for leaks and should be good to go.

An AFR meter is extremely useful in verifying the MFI set up.

Otherwise, it will be a PITA setting up the carbs than switching to MFI.
