964 cam install in a 3.0
So I am on the tail end of my engine rebuild and I have a question on my cam install. Obviously the nut and large wavy washer go with the stock cams and I have the bolt and washer that go with the 964 cams.
When I installed the cam it seems like the end shaft of the cam should stick out pretty far past the sprocket but it doesn't stick out very much. I put the thick washer in bevel facing inward followed by three shims and then the smaller pin sprocket. I tapped the sprocket until it was seated but the shaft does not protrude past the end of the chain sprocket. Am I doing something wrong or is this what it is supposed to look like? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1425258747.jpg |

I'll bet you 5 bucks you are right. It's quite easy for the key to flip up and out. If you are having difficulty, you could put a tiny dimple on the side of the key so it's fits tightly in the cam. A sharp center punch does the deed but go easy, you don't need much of a hit to get the desired effect.

Well, you owe me 5 bucks! The key was in perfect and the gear was all the way back.
The gear slides on and off with just a little resistance and it is seated against the washers. I put the other side on and it is nearly identical. Any ideas? I have searched for pix of a 964 cam in a 3.0 but no luck. Someone please chime in. |
Sprocket position
Found this picture that looks a lot like what mine look like

Cash or PayPal on the 5er? Tom, I don't suppose you have your old cams to compare the depth on the stub on the two cams. I don't know if the the 964 and 3.2 cams are different in that regard but you could contact the cams guys for some advice or check out their catalogs to see if they are different. Going from memory, the last picture you posted looks about right, certainly in your first picture, there is too much distance between the cam end and sprocket.

That's really pretty close, there is no over proud there.
Did you do chain alignment? Bruce |
Not yet, that might make it better if a shim gets taken out.
I will do the chain alignment and see if it makes a difference. |
If the cam came through the gear you wouldn't be able to measure and shim to parallel and you wouldn't be able to tighten to spec as the chain gear would be loose.

This is how mine came apart. When I packed and labeled everything I used zip ties to keep everything together so I would not have to remember how it came apart.

Just remember going back together is in reverse. |
Good pics and explanation
Not pictured, before the spacers are removed and while doing sprocket alignment the key in the cam needs to be out of the keyway Bruce |

I will work on chain alignment this weekend.
Thanks for all of your help. The pictures were a HUGE help. |
The conical side is at the bolt head.

Guess I should flip it over when I get home
|
So Tom, what happened? Did you get it figured out?
|
Couldn't get to it this weekend as I was out of town until Saturday evening. I will get back on it Wednesday.

Chain alignment
So, checked chain alignment and the right side looked like this
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1425856793.jpg Left side looked like this http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1425856821.jpg I think these are both within specs |
So I am going to put it together
