1999 996 Head Torque Specs

Hello all,

I recently bought a 99 911 with a blown headgasket (presumably because the oil looked like mustard).

I bought the headgaskets here and the instructions are not clear enough for me, I'm not sure if I need to torque the studs at 30 or 20 Nm???

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My guess.

anziehen means to put on, so tighten the bolts to 20Nm in that pattern, then tighten all the bolts to 30Nm.

My guess....IF it works like a Subaru head gasket.....

The first symbol indicates to use new head bolts. So you use the pattern and tighten to 30NM to "stretch" the new head bolts. The second symbol, a "box" suggests you loosen all...per the pattern or in reverse sequence of the pattern, then you tighten ("box" symbol) to 20NM, followed by tightening 60 degrees rotation per the pattern and finally tightening another 60 degrees per the pattern.

However, this is just a guess!

Thanks guys, I think 30 Nm (22 ftlb) is right, it was about that for the 2.7 and 3.2 I rebuilt, so I'll roll with it. So torque angle being 60 degrees is 10 minutes on the clock, I'm guessing they are saying to ram them all down in sequence at 20 Nm then use 10 minute turns on each bolt in sequence until 30 Nm is met.

I'll let you guys know what happens tomorrow when I fire it up.

For what it's worth, Torque and angle described:

Ok, I'm officially scared.... not even close to 20 Nm and it feels like I'm stretching the hell out of these studs.... When I owned my '75 911s for 10 years, and when I rebuilt the engine and torqued the heads, Im sure they were not this tight (by feel). Unfortunately I gave away my manual and Wayne's book (which sorry wayne, wasn't helpful with timing) I have no reference to apply here... I don't know what to do now, I reset the torque wrench down to 12 Nm and got a click on a few, but I can feel it's not right. Can anyone find out if 20Nm is right? or if this cheap headgasket and accompanying instruction page is going to destroy my bolts and worse the threads in the block...

I am want to know the answer to this..

jayson928 03-18-2015 12:35 PM

Yup, still no answer. I went to the elring website and they have a few videos, but none for Porsche, nor do they have a better explanation for the torque ratings.

I heard of a place called Motor Meiser here in California, I'm getting too old to deal with missing details, going to see if they want to finish the head and installation.

Also, SCaddadle, that was a very informative video. I've heard of angle degrees many times, didn't know they were completely different than torque, just assumed it was torqueing by the angle of the wrench lol...

WOW, that would be a fitting next step to this disaster in progress.

1st things 1st 996 engines NEVER blow head gaskets, your symptom with oil & water mixed is known as intermix, search the 996 & Boxster forum for info on how to properly repair this common fault. This engine has nothing in common with it's aircooled ancestors. Motor Meister is renowned world wide for fraudulent Porsche activity!

jayson928 03-18-2015 03:35 PM

Thanks BYprodriver.... Yes, it indeed feels like a disaster at this point. During the engine extraction I saw a cleaner than normal exhaust port on the #6, so I didn't hesitate to tear down that side. I couldn't find any obvious damage to the gasket, it looked new considering the engine has 80k mi on it.

I did some research on Motor Meiser, not sure how those guys are still in business or even showing their face in public! Glad I didn't start any business with them.

Ok, now off to study the intermixing, hopefully we're not talking about a cracked block :(

Thanks again!

Jay

All the coolant hoses need to be replaced due to deterioration from the oil. That's over $1,500 for hoses alone. If your 996 is in So.CA I might buy it as-is.

I am now putting my engine back together 2002 3.6 996 having problems with finding the same information what have you learned?

SCadaddles answer is correct.
