G96/G97 instead of G50?
Hi all,
I am looking at options for the revision of my transmission (it does have 300,000km or 180,000miles on it). Prices I got: 4,500-5,000 for rebuild 2,000-3,000 for LSD ----------------- 6,500-8,000 Total I could sell my transmission for about 3,000 as is and instead by a reconditioned or upgraded transmission for 996/997 GT3 Cup for about 5,000-10,000 (minus the 3,000€), with which I should have better and also, cheaper transmission setup. I see 4-5 used ones on sale and one G50 for 15,000€ and a 5 speed turbo for 12,500. It is not a direct bolt on from what I read, but neither a full custom job. Differences I know: - Stock swaybar won't fit - cable shifter necessary What about the drive shafts and the alignment to chassis and what am I not thinking of? Does it make sense at all? 997 GT3 Cup (just as example) racecarsdirect.com (Race Cars For Sale) » Porsche 997 GT3 Cup Gearbox G50 GT2 Evo racecarsdirect.com (Race Cars For Sale) » Ricardo/Gemini Porsche /G50 Titanium Gearbox with over 300 NEWspares Last edited by Undutched; 03-23-2015 at 07:15 AM.. |

Those are sequential gearboxes. Just the shifter is $3000 US. Or paddle shifters are )15,000...

Hi,
I just took that as an example (Price range 5,500 - 10,000) on the used market. Can be any G96 or G97 transmission. That is part of the question. I do not know of all their variants. |

In my business we consider any use motorsports gearbox a core and account for the cost to service it. Those particular gearboxes cost about $15,000 for the 997 Cup and $25,000 for the Gemini conversion to service.
If you went to a 996 Cup or street GT3 gearbox it will be $5000-8000 to service when it needs it. There's no way what you want to do is cost effective versus rebuilding your original gearbox. As for making it work? You've covered the main points. Regards, Matt Monson Guard Transmission LLC

I guess I took a bad example or am technically not on equal level as many members here. I got the idea browsing g50 transmissions and noticed the similarities on bell housing, etc. It could well be a 997 turbo or 996 gt2. Front needs replacing?
I doubt a gt3 (street) would need a rebuild anytime soon, There is a low Milage one for 5000€ and a 996 turbo transmission for 2000€ for sale. In any case an LSD would be necessary, but the main point being the high Milage means most things need to be replaced and hence using a better, newer transmission may suit the project better. |

G96/50 or G97/50 are both six speed , cable shifters turbo gearboxes (big R&P).
I am not sure if they an 964 C2 but I think they will as many people convert them to six speed with 993 G50/2x gearboxes... A GT3 gearbox should have an LSD from factory and an oil cooler. 2000€ for a G96/50 is a steal price... Matt knowledge on gearboxes is second to none! ![]() |

Important information about the factory LSD in all G96 and G97 based street car gearboxes.
LSD buster - Rennlist Discussion Forums Jim, thanks for the compliment, though around these parts I suspect there are a few I consider on par with me. Paul Guard, Pete Zimmermann and Bill Verburg come to mind.
