Head Stud Install

After patiently waiting on three sets of Henry's studs, I finally got to put the first set in. I made a little video that I thought the Pelican community might enjoy from way down here in Florida.
Check it out...
Head Stud Install

Cool vid. You make it look easy.

Nice video.
One of the benefits of the Supertec head studs is that you don't have to measure the studs during installation.
This saves time but more importantly, it makes wrist pin /clip installation simpler and more efficient which means less chance of error. In turn making cylinder installation a breeze.
You can install the piston and cylinder combination with little or no effort.
It also takes some of the hassle out of checking deck height.

Henry, how do I get a set of those cylinder holders in your picture? My fancy Stomski cylinder holders don't work with the M10x1.25... argh. It looks so ghetto with washers and a socket and the 12 point nut holding them on. Yuck!!!

SC, with good parts and good prep, it is easy :)

that is a great video!

this may be a stupid question, but can you replace your head studs without removing your P&C's?

basically just pull a stud and replace with a new stud? or must you pull the cylinder off in order to do this correctly?

They can be made easily if you have a TIG, MIG or gas rig. Cut sections of mild carbon tube to correct length on a chop saw so the ends are square. Weld or braze a washer of the correct size to one end and use a 6 point hardware nut to hold it down against the jug. An el-cheapo way is to use sections of PVC pipe with a washer and nut to hold them down. A lathe is the best way to cut the tube so the ends are perfectly square but a chop saw will do.

edit - the important part is to not have a sharp edge on the end contacting the jug so there is no chance of scratching the jug/head mating surface. The el-cheapo PVC has an advantage there. Looks ghetto but works.

Farrell,

You could replace the cylinder head studs with the P&C installed. But why would like to leave the P&C in situ? You are not saving anything by leaving them there while you removed & replaced the old cylinder head studs. The cam tower/s and cylinder heads have to be removed so what would be the advantage of leaving the P&C's? I don't find any advantage of leaving the P&C while you work on the studs replacements. A shop might do it to save time in getting everything back together. But I doubt it.

That's cool, I was thinking just to save time. because once you remove the P&C's completely i feel like it would be best to hone the cylinders and do you need new rings at that point?

As a precaution, I would be real carefull running a tap dwn and back with out some way to stop the debris from falling in the spigot hole(s)
