911 sc Re-wire

Hi wayne and co

Im about to embark on re-wiring my dads 911 sc after it sustained a front end fire from some sort of AC malfunction.

Is there any process in particular you would advise to follow? I dont want this to happen again so if i can re-wire/future proof it this time around your advice would be much appreciated. I understand the complexity involved im an AV technician and wired cabinets three times the size of whats involved in a 81 porsch. ive just never done a car before.

I beleive i have the right schematics now just a matter of plotting out what goes where. here is what im dealing with. I have a bit of body work before i begine but trying to investigate as much as possible how to go about this project.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1430131775.jpg

You will get a better response in the general help forum.

Timmy2 can build you a new harness that is plug and play. This will allow you to focus on fixing everything else.

Have you been able to determine exactly where the smoke was let out??

I believe it was an A/C fire so directly under the dash front end somewhere. Timmy2 has helped me a tonne with wiring schematics.
What exactly is involved in the harness? Sorry for dumb question

Maybe the unfused instrument light wiring?

I would try to find as much used 911 wiring as possible. There are different individual harnesses tied together in that area. There will be different variations depending on the exact year and options that were original to the car.

Hopefully the original wires from the car can be used as a guide. I would hesitate to build a bastardized harness. You should try to stay as close to original as possible. Use the same wire colors and gauges.

The hard part, if you can't get any original used wire is replicating the plugs and connectors.

There are a couple of guys who sell repo harnesses and connectors on this board.

You should post in the 911 Technical BBS.

Take a look at the resistor pack under the passenger foot board. Sometime is can get a significant amount of crap on it and cause what happened to you. Would hate for you to plug in a brand new harness only to see smoke again!

I just noticed the car is a right hand drive?

Not sure how different that harness is compared to the left hand drive models?

Going to have a look tonight!

Yeah tough job, I had a similar situation with another car and I learned not to throw anything away until its back together, just to help id individual harnesses, components and terminal ends, wire colors etc.
Also try and not cut wires old burnt wires unless absolutely necessary for the same reason. Lay it out on the floor and label where each end goes.
Sorry if I seem overly nit picky but in my case I had very little documentation, and the schematics were not the old school that show a top view of the car and the actual layout.
A general question is does Porsche make replacement harnesses anymore?
