Camshaft install question

As noted in my rebuild thread one of the main changes I'm doing is installing 964 cams.

After I put the cams in, I noticed the left side was a little inset in the cam tower as compared to the right side where it went flush up against the very end of the carrier. I mentioned this to a tech and he told me that he has run into this before on some of his work and that I really didn't need to give it to much thought at that time as it would not matter because the sprockets have not been installed yet. So I didn't. Now that I have the thrust plate on and the spacers in, there is still some movement of the cam in & out of the tower.

I put everything back exactly like it came apart, 1 big spacer 5 small spacers. Even with the woodruff key installed as far in as I can get it the cam still has some jiggling in & out.

I don't know if it's supposed to be like that but if it is not, is my best fix option to get a couple more spacers to get rid of the gap?

Also, is there a more efficient way of installing the woodruff key? I taped up the ends of some Channel Locks and squeezed the hell out of them to press the key into the cam but I can't be sure if it went all the way into the cam end.

Thanks in advance.
