Pelican Parts Forums - Rebuilding 82' sc engine. Looking to upgrade

About 2 years ago I built the 3.0 engine in my 1980 SC into a 3.3SS. I used KN Engineering 100 mm slip fit cylinders, Mahle 10.1:1 pistons, Carrera twin plug heads, 964 cams, Electromotive XDi ignition, SSI exhausts and a modified CIS system. The end result was an engine with good midrange torque and lots of pull all the way up to 7500 rpms. One of the biggest advantages of using the twin plug ignition is that total advance only needs to go to about 25 degrees rather than 36 degrees. This helps the engine run a bit cooler and allows it to run well on premium pump gas. About the only things reused from the 3.0 engine were the block, crank, oil pump and flywheel. The rods that I used were a set of stock 3.0 rods that had been rebuilt by Ollies in California. I had Xtreme Cylinder Heads in Florida do a valve job on the previously race prepped heads. I haven't had this engine on a dyno yet, but it does seem to make quite a bit more hp than the 3.0 did. One thing to remember is that horsepower comes from the heads, the more they flow, the more hp your engine will make. The intakes on the Carrera heads measure 42mm and the exhaust ports measure 41mm. I used an early SC CIS air box and runners because of the larger (39mm) inside diameter. I also made some other changes, basically configuring the CIS the same as the 1973 1/2 system.
