I need clairfication

My car has been running horribly after an autoX that I did back in July on a recent engine build from my mechanic, 2.7 E cam Carb, MSD

The car ran great until I tried turning over the engine for my last timed run. I didn't over rev it/miss shift/etc on the previous run I even had a PCA certified driver in the passenger seat, whom didn't notice anything, and on top of that, I also have the gopro footage of my last run before the car went haywire. I have watched it at least 60 times to see if I did anything in incorrectly, and nothing. I had to tow the car home.

The car can idle, barley, and there's a lot of popping coming out of carb #2. I have fuel pressure, and according to my mechanic I have compression. I checked the carbs and they are all in sync with each other.

My mechanic says it sounds like bad plug wires, so I put new plug wires on it and it's still acting the same.

He picks up the car and takes it back to his shop. Couple days later he tells me that my alternator went out that's the issue. The battery isn't fully charged so there's isn't a good spark. I fully charged the battery and the car runs great. In my head, I am thinking how is the car turning over if the battery is dead.

Could this really be the issue?

Thoughts?

I did some research (on a corvette forum) that a low voltage MSD will act up with bad idle, sputtering and terrible performance at high idle.

Curious, if anyone has experienced this with there MSD?

I wonder if he means the voltage regulator? That would definitely mess with the MSD.

I used to do a lot of drag racing and if the power goes low to the msd box the car would run like crap. Hope that is your problem.
