The Car is a 1980 Euro SC Backdated to a 73 RSR. The MFI system we chose is from a 1972 T as it will give the customer an engine bay that conforms to 72/73 .

Throttle bodies were rebuilt in-house. Housings were bored out for 40.5 throttle plates and 38mm intake ports. All hardware was plated, housings were pickled as close to factory as possible. New custom bushings were installed. upon completion, they were Flowbenched and ready to install.

BURN-BROS 08-07-2015 09:35 AM

It's a New Boss block, Aluminum Cleveland heads, and a Boss 302 Hilborn setup. It's Mocked up checking port match. If things go according to plan, it should redline around 8200 rpm. It's slated to be dropped in a old mustang I have. More pics on Facebook about the build.

Fan refurbishment.

I sourced as early fan so that the Engine bay looked period. It was not in the best of shape, having moderate corrosion....but finding cherry parts is difficult.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1438976973.jpg

Nasty!...but workable. I know that I will not be able to remove all signs of corrosion. After quite a bit of work, the fan is treated to the same process as my throttle bodies. The results maintain all the details that the fan had originally, and a little more "history" presevation than other methods. Not perfection, but industrially handsome. :p

Notice the tonal difference where a worker trimmed the flash from the parting line in the above pic.

Customer should be happy with the results.

Nice, looking forward to additional updates.

Hi Aaron,

Very nice looking motor!!

I was wondering if the colouring on the throttle bodies is as they came from the factory? The throttle bodies on my 72T are the same colour and I thought that they may have just faded over the years.

Cheers,

Harry.

BURN-BROS 08-12-2015 02:39 PM

Thanks Harry,

The 72-73 Throttle bodies vary in finish from very light to almost black. I have old factory photos of the engines when new that I use for both paint markings and overall finish. Ultimately the finish will be influenced by the condition the throttle bodies are in. Same goes for any of the Magnesium parts.

How did you "pickle" to get that nice dark grey surface? Looks fantastic.

Henry

BURN-BROS 08-22-2015 09:24 AM

Thanks Henry. That's a secret  It took a long time for me to come up with it.

I can do a warmer gold finish as well as a cooler blue finish.

The Cool finish is the one in the pic and it is corrosion resistant. Meaning that it will not grow white fuzz just sitting out, but I wouldn't soak it in water.

Wired the alternator, installed updated crank bolt, Fan belt, shroud, cam feed lines and block offs.

What heads are you using? Modded SC heads?

Heads are big port 78/79. The CIS notch was welded up and drilled for the MFI injector.

BURN-BROS 09-09-2015 08:54 AM

Just finishing up a few things on the engine today, then it's off to be installed.

Hi Aaron,

I had a question about how you approach the position of the injector fitting on the later head. Seems logical that the position is "centered" toward the middle/quadrant of the intake port. But is the angle just a matter of setting it such that it clears the throttle body?

At first I was thinking it could be angled just like a CIS or Motronic injector. But then I realized it would probably hit the MFI throttle bodies at such at angle.

Just trying to get a feel for how different the angle is from an MFI arrangement vs. the later CIS or Motronic.

Also, what are your thoughts on the CP pistons? Just curious how they differ from the JE usual suspect.

Thanks
Kevin

I have the angle somewhere, but I just use a factory head to quickly get my angle and position. Yes, it can hit the throttle body as it is a tight area.

So far I like working with them. The big difference is I have much more control in the design of the piston. I get a solid model and theoretical weights prior to placing an order. Something I never got thru J.E. Other piston manufacturers do the same thing, but getting direct feedback from an engineers can be difficult.

KTL 10-22-2015 12:10 PM

Thanks for confirming my suspicion & thanks for your insight on the CP pistons.

Hello
It's often difficult to machine the plastic stacks, Did you bore them ?
Philippe

Hi Philippe,

I bore both plastic and mag stacks inhouse. These were bored 46mm top and 41mm bottom. They are matched to a set of throttle bodies that were bored to take 41mm throttle plates.

Nice work !

Hi Aaron,
I just have to say i love your work on this engine and i want to do the samething on my 3.0!
But i like to know howmuch hp and torque this set up will generate?

Cheers,ferry

BURN-BROS 01-03-2016 11:03 AM

Hi Ferry, Horsepower is around 280 hp depending on the exhaust you choose. With a little more cam and a little less exhaust you can see 300hp.

PorscheRally 01-08-2016 12:07 PM

Hi Aaron,
Beautiful build. Congratulations.
I was wondering which method and media you have used for cleaning the case and all the other alloy to this brand new level ?
Cheers,
Kerem

BURN-BROS 01-10-2016 01:32 PM

Thanks Karem,
I sub contract to a company that specializes in surface preparation. They are usually involved in the manufacturing industry and prep castings and machined parts. The service is not cheap, but the result is a very consistent and appealing finish.
