Would like to know what you are thinking....
 

First post on this forum. I normally only work on 996TT 2001-2005 but decided to help a friend....He bought a use 1976 coupe and I've found some issues with the car. What do you think of this damaged casing... Second picture just to show you the problems I'm facing (electronic speedo wiring)....:mad: I got the engine out last Saturday and this forum was of great help!!! Thanks everyone!!!

If your plan is to rebuild that mag case motor, when you send it out for the case resizing, oil bypass mod, etc. you can have Ollies weld up the damage. Not too expensive.

On photo #2. . . is that an original Home Depot wire nut? :)

Thanks for your reply! You think a good welder can build a new surface, lobe, for the bolt! On my 996TT I had the coolant pipes welded and it was difficult due to impurities in the casting... We are not planning to split the case but I will pass this information to the owner. The the Home depot hardware lol!!! I think the previous owner was a home electrician because there are many marrets especially behind the cluster, ouch.... ;-(

Ollies welded up some potential weak spots on my case so, yes, these cases can be successfully welded. Maybe your repair can be done but I don't see how without splitting the case. Then, you get into a number of other issues associated with splitting Mg cases that will require a good bit of machine work.

Unless leaking from behind that bolt heavily, I would let a sleeping dog lie. If you're looking for perfection then I would have at it with a budget of around $6-10K.

Almost looks as if someone used a grinder to get to the bolt previously. Appears triangle of death/rear main seal are gushing.

Wow in fact very nice work!!!

The owner is not ready to spend lots of money on getting the case open so we decided to get thicker washers fabricated and install them with longer bolt and shoulder nut....Thanks for your advice everyone!!!

Put a couple large washers on it and keep it bolted up,its not going to fall off...

Great! And put the wire nuts back on and enter it in the Home Depot concours!

Please convince the owner that if somebody treated the engine like that, he will save a lot of money in the long term fixing it right and fixing it today. An engine rebuild is about a $10,000 proposition done right. . . the price just goes up from there with the passage of time and the manifestation of latent (or not-so latent) defects.

Of course, a friend will fabricate thicker washer and will go with this... And agree with you , it should last for a while....Thanks!

The owner never done any mechanical work in his life but I'm trying to train him, at least to do his own oil change....We have to face one problem at the time. It will take many days, months to fix everything properly but as you said the value of the car will increase for every positive step we make!!!
