2.7 engine value question
 

I was going to post this in the market place forum but suspect the experts reside here.

I was selling a stripped targa chassis but ended up swapping it to a friend in exchange for a number of parts which included a complete but disassembled 1977 2.7 911/85 engine. This got the chassis out of my precious work shop space which was a big issue.


The engine was said to have been taken apart due to pulled head studs. Most studs have time certs, and have evidence of what appears to be a bolt extractor. There is a weld repair at one chain ramp bolt, there is a crack at one rear engine mount stud.

Upon visual inspection the crankshaft journals all appear good with no observable damage, all other rotating internals look good as well, though nothing mic'd yet for verification.

Cylinders are badly scored and I suspect this engine was an oil burner. Ring lands are beat.

It's complete from air box to drain plug, release bearing to muffler.

It's missing the engine tin but does have pressure fed tensioners and turbo lower valve covers.

Question is, due to the case issues and scrap pistons/cylinders is this better sold in parts or is it still worth keeping together as a package for someone to rebuild?

Any idea of value?

I can almost guarantee that the case will have to be machined. An by "machined", I mean "resized". The last time I had this done was probably 8-10 years ago and in was around $1000.

"But, but, but the bearings look fine!" Here's the thing: when you unbolt the case halves of a 2.7, they go "boing" and twist. (They don't actually make a sound.) To see for yourself, put the crank back in and try to turn it...

Thanks for the feedback Chris though being a mag case I'd think it's a given line boring would be required. Question is, does the case have any value given the crack and weld repair or is it garbage (along with the P&C)?

If the case is garbage then I'll just part everything else out, but if the case still has value then I'll probably sell as a whole. I also don't know if 2.7 parts have any value, crank, intermediate gear, heads, cam towers etc etc.

A marginal quality 2.7 is way too expensive to build. There is some good sale able parts if anyone wants to build. The time cents can be reinstalled, it's not uncommon for them to come out. The broken stud boss, there is still 3 solid ones. A standard crank, tensioners, injection or pieces of it.
Scratched cylinders can be opened to 2.8, 92mm. Etc,
The sum of the parts exceeds the value of the whole....

Bruce, I hear what you're saying and see that part-out is the best suited end to this poor old 2.7. Thanks for the input.

I also notice a couple 2.7 motors on the classifieds stated as cores, there looks to be plenty complete motors around if someone needs a base for a rebuild project.

If you are parting out, I would be interested in the pressure fed chain tensioners.

Second point would be, if you part it out you have to justify each piece that you sell.
If you sell it whole, it is what it is. You're out of the circle but the next guy will part it..it's just who wants to get involved.
My problem is I still live in the 80s when a complete core 2.7 running would bring $700-800 and the only place we had to sell at was once a month in Panorama, Excellence, or one of several swap meets depending how far you were willing to drive.
