The key word in finding a plug is the part description of 'flush mount'. I see Mcmaster has one that is ~1/2 depth, maybe you already have that. The plug I used was around 3/8" depth, but I found mine in my parts stash for compressed air fittings. No idea where it came from, but I used to buy big bags of assorted surplus AN hardware at the Oskosh fly in, so maybe there.
Going from memory, I think the plug needs to be flush to the case for the fan housing to fit. Mock it up to check. If it clears the fan housing and everything else there, congratulations, you're done.
If not and you can't find a shorter plug than the 1/2" length, then you need to measure the distance from case edge to oil gallery hole and trim your plug length to to that measurement. If it still does not go all the way in you will need to use your pipe tap to carefully cut the threads deeper in the case. Just be careful, not too difficult. I tapped my case holes when the brand new Porsche factory plugs did not fit my case.
Just checked the web and the torque spec for a 3/4" NPT plug is 240-300 INCH pounds. Verify for yourself.
