Another question about air pump removal

Thanks in advance for everyone's help with these questions. I'm removing the air pump system from my 1979 SC. I took out the belt, motor and a small unit on the base of the upper engine compartment. This small unit, which I've attached a pic of, had a small vacuum line going into it (pic also attached) What should I do with this vacuum line? What was its purpose?

There are now two holes between my upper engine compartment and the lower engine compartment. Is that how it should be or did I take out too much?

Thanks,
PB
