Stuck case through-bolt washer saga ends
Well, I won the battle but at what cost?
To get this washer out of the case I tried penetrating sealant, heat, and picking at it with a screwdriver from all angles. Then I tried a tapered easy out that I tapped into the washer to get the tool to bite and then spin it to break it free. Nothing. Somehow I had to get a tool or something in the tight seam between the washer and the case. I tried tapping the end of a screwdriver into a 90 degree angle but ended up breaking two of them. Out comes the torch and I heated the next disposable flathead screwdriver of which my supply was dwindling quickly. Once it was red-hot I was able to form a nice little pick that I could wedge into the seam and then tap another screwdriver in next to it to force the tooth into the seam and prevent it from backing out. Now to be able to get a good whack at it I put the closed end of a wrench under the handle of the screwdriver and pounded upward on the wrench with the intent of lifting the washer out of the case. After the handles of two screwdrivers lifted off and about a dozen tries, I was able to budge the washer and finally it lifted out of the case. As you can see the case is buggered up where the washer seats where the Viton o-ring sits. Some 574 will seal the O ring....

Thanks Bruce. I was thinking some RTV. Would I apply the 574 to the o-ring only I was thinking some under the washer where it seats up against the case as well.

I was thinking more tongue in cheek.
Any RTV, leave it in the tool box. The 574, once you apply and remove the air from it, it starts to cure. You just want to fill in the scratches and seat the O ring. Bruce |
Thanks Bruce I got the tongue-in-cheek response from you LOL. More 574 right?? Seriously though is that really the acceptable application for this 574 sealant? I suppose if it works, it works I really wasn't questioning my mechanics use of it but I had not heard of using it on the case-through bolt washers. It sure made it harder to get the washers out.

Would Hylomar between the washer and case surface be something that might also work in this scenario?

All I ever do with the O rings is grease liberally.
As for the 574, I was thinking of filling the scratches that you caused. Bruce |
Maybe use two green viton o-rings there, along with some Dirko sealer.
