Air-cooled engine rebuild class

Is anyone offering an air-cooled engine rebuild class like Bruce Anderson and Jerry Woods offered in the past?

kevin930t 04-15-2016 01:29 PM

That would be cool

everyone learns at a different rate which offers a real challenge to people with a limited allotment of time.
This forum offers a great deal of experience to draw from.
If your goal is to learn, read through the posts that interest you, ask questions and ignore the one time builders that want to reinvent the wheel.
Cheers

Thanks Henry. Sounds like a good approach.

Stephanie Anderson still sells the manuals for his classes. But yes, it would be great if someone offers these classes now.

There must be plenty here who took them when they were still offered.

I talk to Jerry regularly. I'll ask him if he's ever considered doing the classes again. They wouldn't be the same without Bruce but it would still be pretty awesome.

Otherwise buy Wayne's engine book AND a copy of the engine section of the factory manuals for your car. A good home mechanic can definitely figure it out without an instructor, as Henry mentions.

Any particular examples Henry? Would no doubt help other first time builder from re-re-inventing wheels...

Count me enrolled in the next class. Let me know if I can get there by plane, train, or Porsche.

I have the class syllabus but there is no education like hands on...

Guilty.....I'm a one time builder, thanks to this forum I didn't reinvent the wheel, but was guided to decisions to build a motor just a little bit over the edge.

Like Henry suggest, I asked a lot of questions and was given immediate feedback in this forum by experts to keep me from going down the rabbit hole. I also had a local builder hands on through the cam timing and to double check me at points of the build.

Still running strong. SmileWavy

I talked to Jerry yesterday. I don't think he will ever offer the class again. He indicated it was largely Bruce's baby and that it would be a huge undertaking for him to try to facilitate it on his own. He was the technical brains but Bruce ran the thing.

I ordered the books used in Bruce and Jerry's class from Stephani Anderson.

Books include: Maintenance, Transmission Overhaul, and Engine Overhaul for $70. If you are interested in ordering the books you can reach her at stephani@mac.com.

Thank you Matt for reaching out to Jerry.

Bruce Anderson notes

I contacted Stephani Anderson (stephani@mac.com) to see if Bruce's rebuild notes are still available. Here's the reply (note change in address).

Hello:

Yes, they are. I will keep printing them as long as there is interest. These 3 manuals along with his last edition of the “911 Performance Handbook” will give you
so much information. Just to be clear, these are class manuals and are not in a “cook book” style.

Also, my mailing address has changed: 1400 West Marlette Street, Spc 79, Ione, CA 95640.

Or, you can use Paypal…..

I need to update that post but do not know who to contact.

Regards,
Stephanie Anderson
Here's the post from EarlySRegistry she is referring to:

These manuals cover all air cooled 911's. If you did not attend one of his and Jerry's classes you at least need these manuals in your library.

There are 3 different class manuals:

911 Engine Overhaul (57) pages); 911 Transmission Overhaul (30 pages); 911 Maintenance (28 pages)

In the U.S., the cost of each (includes shipping) would be for 1 manual $30; for 2 manuals $50; for 3 manuals $70

Outside the U.S., the cost of each (includes shipping) would be for 1 manual $50; for 2 manuals $70; for 3 manuals $90

Contact me at: stephani@mac.com

You can either send me a check or pay me through PayPal.
NOTE: I would appreciate it if you would pay the PayPal fees when you send money. Thank you.
