fresh rebuild of 2.2 engine has minor oil leak
Just finished a very careful and complete rebuild of my 2.2 engine...[my first 911 assembly] It runs perfectly and I am happy with everything except the quarter size drops of oil from the engine every night.
It is coming from the vertical crankcase joint just in back of the flywheel... I did not machine the case halves but I did clean everything thoroughly and carefully applied the locktite 574. Is there anything that can be done externally to address this minor leak..it is just from the residual oil in the crankcase and has nothing to do with a pressure oil leak...I am ready to pull the engine and break it apart to reseal it if I have to. Any ideas or theories will be deeply appreciated. Thanks to all, Ron |

Could be the flywheel seal. I think you could replace it without any engine disassembly or splitting the cases.
Recent posts addressed a similar problem on the case split lime. Final action was to clean it up, and use JB weld to seal it from the outside. Not ideal but got the job done. |

Thank you for the ideas..I did replace the flywheel seal during the engine assembly.
Since I posted my problem, I tried some of that luminous oil additive that glows bright orange under a black light. The leak is definitely coming from the case split joint and can be stopped by snapping a small vise grip on to the flanges of the cases between the bottom 2 case bolts..My plan now is to create a new part that will do the job of the vise grip and not look quite as bad. |

Is that a magnesium case?
If so I would be careful about that. The JB weld may be a safer option. Alan
