Help me understand what an Elgin 314/296/102 cam is
 
This is in a V3 2.7 motor. I am interested in when power comes on with this cam. This will be street driven with an occasional DE. Compression is 10-1, 46IDA Weber, Woods recurved with Pertronix, timing set at 328@6000. Advice, help, anything is welcome. Lots to learn.

That cam is NOT streetable in a 2.7. :)

Its a 5500-8K profile and best suited for a (race) 3.5 and up.

What do you suggest. It dynoed at 260hp at 8000 rpm, max torque at 5500prm. Thanks

Jeff, You've already had it on a dyno so you must know when the power comes on. Am I missing something?

In case you don't know the Duration in common cam guy terms in 271/254 Dema uses .006 instead of .050 to be more relative to what the ramps and the valve see.
It is still alot of Duration but if you have long primary pipes and it is installed with some advance it will be a Hot Rod but doable.

No, the dyne result was given to me. I know nothing about race engines. This was built as a V3 race car. I bought it and want to make a hot rod out of it. My butt dyno determine what to do with it. I drive an S2000 and that RPM is useless under 6k. I can't get around a city bus.

I have not driven this thing, as I know the seller really well, so there's no concern there. I do know its a fresh built motor. Dying to know how it drives. It has the typical gearing with really tall first gear. 70 mph @8000rpm Car is apart with motor and tranny attached but no carbs.

314/296 is basically a GE80. As racing97 said, Dema names his cams with the seat to seat duration. The info is on his site. GE60s (Elgin 306/288) or even Mod-S in that engine would probably be a lot more fun to drive on the street.

A couple things re: driveability. You may already know this, but from what you describe, the manners of this 911 won't be anywhere near as good as your S2000. It's not just about not having low end. A carbed 911 race motor will probably cough, spit, and burble at low RPM and part throttle. It will no doubt be a blast to drive, but you may wind up find it frustrating babying the thing around on the street. And I think you may pull all your hair out driving with a 70 mph 1st gear on the street. I have a 2.7L race motor similar to yours and a similar 1st gear, and it's a PITA to drive around the paddock. I can't imagine it would be any fun on the street.

Maybe an S plus type grind? And make sure you have a sprung clutch disk, not the solid type. Have fun with the car, whatever you do with it - sounds like a blast!

Ok, school me on this primary pipes deal please. I have all paper work with the built. I should post it so i can get a free education on cams and engine performance. This is a new motor and the guy lost interest in racing. That's if you guys don't mind doing a little typing.

Racing enigines use PPM for best power results if one were to lengthen the Inlet tract, advance the Cam and or lengthen the pipe from the port to the collector you would move the power band and Peak Torque so that it will responed at lower RPMS. Naturally at a cost to the Peak Power but more drivable and managable with a broad power band.

Yeah, I am thinking about S grind cam as well. The other thing is to get re-gear the transmission. to a street box. It a newly rebuilt unit and that I know its done "right".
