Alusil and nikasil cylinders........

I been observing lately that people are now having their cylinders reconditioned or replated. First, can not find the thread or posts about identifying a cylinder. What are the physical differences between an alusil and nikasil cylinders or identifying features of these cylinders. Read a while back posts by Tom Butler and others about identifying these cylinders and could not locate them. Thanks.

Tony

Hey Tony. Nikasil slightly magnetic. Alusil not. Alusil very light grey color. Nikasil darker brown. Manufacture markings on base of cylinder, although my Alusil did not have any.(Mahle or KS).

A magnet will be attracted, lightly, to a Nikasil coating.
Here are the Mahles with Nikasil coating from my SC. If the motor is together, Mahles have eleven fins. KS has ten.

Tony. Lots of info
Nikisil will be Mahle, K/S will be alucil
Except on 2.7 Mahle made both kinds. K/S was alucil on 2.7

Found the information needed.......

Thanks guys. Tom Butler had a post awhile back about identifying alusil and nikasil cylinders and he sent me the link. Read them and got all the needed information. The magnet test also confirmed that the 'subject cylinders' are in fact nikasil with 11 fins.
