Spare Parts Anyone ?
Its bound to happen. You get done putting back together this or that and at the end of the day when you wished you had a cold one near by to relax you come across that "extra" nut or bolt. The ones you toss in the box on the floor and say to yourself "gee, they always overbuild these things". Or, maybe, "oh yeah, I ordered a few too many extras".
I found one of these hanging around after rebuilding the top. Thought I did order an extra... 'just in case'. A few weeks later when I crank it up I had an oil leak at #4, between the jug and the case? You scratch your head and ponder how oil could reach that level. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1464828344.jpg After cleaning off the oil drips and related slipperys that get blasted around I started her up again and throttled it up lightly. Now I had a "rat a tat tat". OMG! Chain tension-er collapse? A valve rapping on dome? Sloppy wrist pin? On and on. And now, oil leaking between the top of the jug and the head? Friggen, friggen, another engine drop. But where is the friggen oil coming from. Tear out the fan and alternator and shining in the light. What the heck? Bone dry upstairs. And all the usual suspects (thermostat seal, oil breather manifold gasket, temp sensors, etc).... all innocent. Thankfully there are friends at hand to help the newbie on the rebuild. "Check your rocker shafts, you got a loose one". No way! Crossed the T's, dotted the I's, 3 times, triple checked torques, there is no way I missed anything, its gotta be something else. Yup Its those Spare Parts! |
Well, that wasn't kuehl! :)

Too much refrigerant exposure - might be time to reverse the gasses !!!

Oh my, glad you caught that early
or this could have happened: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...ps2opqpksd.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...psnhktrd84.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...psdqxw2kfl.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...pshc0o4zy6.jpg Lucky I was at a gas station when this failure occurred |

Draco, ohhh, that's big ouch !
Must be those "new" cast rockers or someone put the springs in upside down. RawKnees, you stalker. You know R134a does not make you forget things, it just kinda enhances the distance between the synapses, its like a generic Xanax. |

I was going to suggest a spal fan or two to blow the oil away.... |
Griff, you are a very stalk worthy individual; the victim is to blame, in other words!!!
Bill, excellent suggestion, and along those lines, maybe Griff should make a mobile rig (kind of like a drafting light arm) for a Spal fan so that he can aim it at his face while working (the fan being controlled with an octanary switch, buttofcourse)?!?!?! |

Did you remember those RSR seals? [emoji12]

The missing hardware for the rocker shaft was intake number #6.
Fortunately no damage happened. Put it in yesterday and was lucky I had a set of "spare" valve cover gaskets. Hope to fire it back up today and see if that 'rat a tat tat' is gone. The top end repair (rings) should have taken a few days but work/clients come first. Ring choice was a big boo boo: its running 3.5 jugs with 9.5:1 JE's plus 8 psi of boost. Mistakes: A) Forgot to tweek back the timing B) Did not know we had 8psi of boost, thought we were closer to 5-6 C) High top JE's mess of the flame spread, it is now twin plugged but deciding on what to fire the extra 6 D) The JE pistons came with cast rings, got custom set of Total Seal rings. Yup, I did go back and check the other rocker shafts and all are tight and located where they should be. And, "RSR" seals too along with new rocker shafts and hardware. No corrosion in the bores. |
wow great lesson there for sure. being a one time builder i would put all the parts i need for a section laid out on a table or in a parts bin. then i new if all parts were used up i was good. ( kon bon i think its called ) . then i would lay out the tools i need in a particulaR spot and make sure they are all there when done (4s)
thats a great share OP that you didnt have too !!! |
