2.2S Piston - question - crosshatch on skirt
Hi,
I'm looking at two sets of 2.2S pistons. The first piston below, obviously, has a crosshatch on the skirt? Are the hatched pistons something other than Mahle? Or is the hatch some special addition? I've asked the seller for the casting number on the underside, but the domes and profile of the skirt bottom looks more like a 70.4 stroke clearance profile. The second pic is the other set which have the correct casting number corresponding with 2.2S. Thank you kindly for your input. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1465056885.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1465057151.jpg |
Good God,......some machine shop knurled those things; something only done on American engines when someone could not afford new pistons. I would not use those in anything.
Check ring land clearances on those others to make sure they are not close to being worn out. |
Well I don't know about you Steve but the application was absolutely stellar

Thank you very much gentlemen. These pistons and cylinders were represented as being deemed by a reputable shop as in very good serviceable condition... I'll pass on this set and request ring grove specs on the other set.
If the second set should fail to be within spec, and nobody has a good set of serviceable Mahle, I'll likely pursue AA performance biral/JE package, unless you gentlemen advise against the AA option. Best, Anna |
Anna,
For maximum durability, I'd strongly suggest Mahle pistons & cylinders as nothing else lasts anywhere near as long. You really do get what you pay for. :) |
Thanks Steve!
Hope the second set of 2.2S Mahle pistons are in spec, then I'll look for in spec 84mm Mahle cylinders Kindest regards, Anna |
Used to do that to the old air cooled VW's.
