engine stand, Baum vs. SIR
 

Pelican sells two versions of the P201 engine stand, made by Baum ($600) and SIR ($300). To my eye, they both look identical. Big difference in price, though. Can anyone comment on the functional differences between the two tools and if the price difference is justified?

A ton of people have used the SIR engine stand adapter yoke with excellent results. I have two of them and they've gotten a fair amount of use in approx. 15 years. They are good quality and feel like they are built to last a lifetime.

Baum tools are nice but also notoriously overpriced. I honestly think you'd be throwing away $300 by choosing the Baum yoke.


That said, I have to be honest all SIR tools are not without fault. Awhile back I bought some transmission synchro press tools and one of them was machined improperly in the bore to establish the ridge which grabs the synchro tooth ring in the circlip groove. The ridge is too wide and it split the teeth ring, which made it garbage. Unfortunately the ring I was removing was coming off of a new Guard gear, which really sucks losing a perfectly good set of teeth. :mad:

Another Pelican member messaged me and indicated he had the same problem with his P225 tool. We contacted Pelican and were told SIR was looking into it. But we got no satisfaction in terms of a return/refund or any update to this day on a resolution for our faulty tools. The other Pelican member had his machined to rectify the problem. Mine just sits on the shelf until I get around to measuring it and having someone machine it.

But in the case of this engine stand yoke, you'll be fine with the SIR version.

Interesting question. My thoughts are: SIR have been great for the all engines up to the 3.2 and or early turbos.

Over the years, the motors have gained lots of weight.
Example, the 964 , 993 vram engines. They are much heavier than say the 2.0 engines.

My thoughts are for the late model heavy engines , its best to pick up a five arm engine yoke..I would select a Baum. Now that's just me. Good luck with your selection.
