Buying/Selling built SC 911s
I posted this on Rennlist and it was suggested to repost it here for thoughts.
A lot of guys build out their SC 911s, cams pistons, carbs, engine swaps, etc. I don't see these cars turn up on the usual spots, eBay, AutoTrader, etc. When a built 911 is sold where are the places to find them? I think of Racing Junk as being the place for heavily tracked cars, are there other sites for nicely built and cared for cars? Key search phrases? I've heard that recouping the value of mods is difficult, but at least if the car is being sold through a site for those who want a built car and don't require bone stock, there should be some price appreciation for the work and care put into a nicely built 911. The reason for my question is my SC is a daily driver and I'm contemplating cams, pistons, etc. It could be a win/win to find someone who built their engine and has put a considerable amount of time and improvements in their car and sell out my stock one. Some of the builds are pieces of art, really nicely done. I'm not talking Singer complete redo's, but good clean builds. There is a lot of discussion on here on builds, but I don't see sales. I'm going under the assumption that there are guys who tweak the engine that aren't crazy hot rodders, but guys who want to feel the car come alive. I had a 997 S and changed the plenum and exhaust (200 cel cats) and it was just wonderful how it opened the car up, basically converted it to a GTS. |

Porsche club "mart" lists a lot of race cars and personal customs a well as stock cars.
Pelican parts also has a used car section in the forum. I think the general concensus is you take a loss on performance mods, even if it a PCA or POC club racer. |

Typically, when a car is modified from its current stock configuration its value will usually depreciate. Mostly because it is only original once. I agree that there are things that really make the car come alive as I have done those exact things on mine. Cams, exhaust, suspension... I did them because I was getting tired of being left by the Boxster and 996 guys when the track would open up only to catch them again when the track became very tight and twisty.
In addition to the usual spots, you can try race-cars.com as that website is only about track prepped cars that are for sale. Although I must admit I have come across some very nice cars on the for sale section of this website and eBay. Dont get frustrated if you haven't come across a car that you like enough to contact the seller, it takes time. Be patient, the right one will pop up. You have to remember, you will be getting someone else's tastes on what they wanted so you give up that part of the customization. Best of luck.
