Alusil Cylinder Pitting

Hi there,

I am cleaning my cylinders in preparation for a rebuild. I noticed today that one of the cylinders has some small pitting. Could anyone who has experience with this type of problem comment about how the cylinder looks, and if they feel the cylinder could be reused?

Thank you,
Jeff

I will be very surprised if anyone that knows more about this than I do, tells you it can be used as is.

If it were below the area where the rings contact, it'd probably be fine. But it's not unfortunately.

Looks like a manufacturing defect. Some porosity in the original casting. You'll have to be the judge, but I suspect it's been there since the beginning. It's way down inside the cylinder so it will have a minimal effect on compression. I might try to find a single replacement but, if your wear is minimal you'll have a hard time finding a better replacement. I'd be tempted to reuse it.
