Locking SC Distributor for 930?

I have a 1976 930 that I want to lock the distributor on. I was wondering if I could use an early 911 SC 3.0L distributor instead of my original distributor since the distributor curve would not come into play as it would be locked down. I live in CA and need to smog every two years so I would want to just swap the distributors for smog when necessary. Aside from locking down the distributor I would need to change the drive gear as the early 930 have a CW rotation.

Would this work?

Thanks,

Rahl

Rahl,

The SC distributor will not work since it rotates CCW and yours is CW.

The Carrera 3.0 rotates CW and would be a candidate for what you are proposing. Make sure you allow for rotor phasing if you lock the advance out.

Another option might be converting a 3.2 Carrera distributor.
It rotates the correct direction and all you need to drive it is the correct drive gear. Early 2.0-2.7 gear.
Adding the electronics is a little challenging but it can be done.
If you're looking to lock the advance you might simply install a Pertromix unit or something similar.

As for your smog issue, send me an email and I might be able to help you with that.....legally of course.

Thanks Steve! So you can not just run a distributor backwards? CW vs CCW?

Thanks Henry!

I sent you an e-mail.

Rotor phasing ?

Steve,
I'm working on the same issue as Rahl. Can you elaborate on rotor phasing?

I have a similar question about the CCW vs. CW distributor. Is it possible to modify a CCW distributor to make it work CW?

"Can you elaborate on rotor phasing? "
When a dizzy is locked it has to be in a position so the rotor to tower terminal distance is such that at full advance the rotor won't fire to the previous tower (#5 on these when setting for #1) It depends on how much advance, diameter of dizzy cap and width of the rotor and tower terminals. These engines have a small dizzy diameter but a wide rotor terminal. On other engines they make larger diameter caps and adjustable rotors to get the right phasing.

Anything is possible but it's not a practical option.
