2.0 build opinions
So, let's open up the can of worms. I'm looking for opinions on my path
I am in process of a 2.0 build for vintage racing. Not crazy time-bomb, just strong reliable power. So, here goes: Mag case with all the mods S crank knifed/drilled, etc. Carillo or Pauter rods Cosworth 906/911R style pistons 120/104 web cam 911R spec heads 38/38 with 45/39 valves 46mm PMO with tall manifolds This is going in my, from scratch, 914/6 build. Looking forward to seeing the build's progression - make sure to include photos during the progress :)

Thanks Dmitry.
This was 2.0 engine question, not a 914 question...... |
There are two ways to look at building the 2L six for vintage racing. The first is a high revving screamer that has to stay above 5K RPM to get anywhere and second is a "torquer" sort of engine that makes the power at 3K RPM of so. I had both types in my 914-6 and the first screamer lasted 26 race weekends before breaking a rod. The second engine went in and the main difference was the cam profile and heads that had been flowed so power was much easier to control. Either one will work and needs a very good oil cooler and filter system with oil changes after each weekend.
When we opened the screamer engine we found the crank, rods, valves and such were all Porsche! The cam was the 904 grind and the heads had been flowed by someone in the Los Angeles area (forget who). Even the valve springs were stock Porsche which surprised us. Sooooooo many of those parts were used with a new build which was easier to drive and I only had three race weekends before I sold the car to a collector. I hope my rambling made sense and I would suggest working with a race mechanic or engine builder to get an idea of what works and what does not. I am lucky that I live in So Cal and we have many race shops and excellent engine builders to gain knowledge from. Good luck. |
Sounds like fun......this should be moved to the Engine Build Forum, you'll get lots of support. Best, Mark

2.0 911 914-6 race engine
so- you have a parallel thread going here - http://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-engine-rebuilding-forum/942443-web-cam-question.html
this is hardly "from scratch" - you apparently already have all the parts in hand that you ask about - so why are you asking? - . look hard at these cars - & talk to those engine builders 914-6 GT Vintage Build | 2.0L / 901 By Patrick Motorsports Porsche & Mid Engine Performance Specialists 914 6 2.0L - Vintage Racer By Patrick Motorsports Porsche & Mid Engine Performance Specialists VARA https://vintagevoiceonline.wordpress.com/ "The orange and white CPGT Porsche 914-6 of Justin Desimone polesitter Leon Desimone’s 914-6 ... the 914-6 of Kevin Roush" . I don't see an issue with the poster's inquiry, or that he posted in two places looking for opinions.

My apologies, I misread the post - back to the Engine Build forum.
