The ceramic lining (its not a coating) is critical for keeping the heads cooler as well as maintaining proper exhaust flow. When the ceramic liner gets damaged, the head should be replaced. I don't see any damage, besides the missing pieces of guide boss, but I cannot tell you anything further without inspecting it for myself. :)

I think the mystery is solved. The previous owner was going to remove all the boss material. He was going to convert the motor to a turbo charged engine and wanted to increase the air flow. He had purchased an original Ruf turbo charger and had started building the project motor, then lost interest.

I am going to remove the heads on the one side to have it repaired.
