Is it a stain or can you feel a difference?

scuffing

Marks like that come from a motor that has sat for awhile.Dirty oil & rings getting a little rusty from moisture. Then they lit it up bringing it back to life. That motor was tight and cracked loose when they turned it over.Fred

Craig,
Feels a bit rougher.

Fred,
Yeah, that's probable. This is from a basket case 78 engine I'm tearing down.

Here's the corresponding piston.

BTW what's the trick to splitting the case ? Heat ? Hours of hammering with a mallet made no difference. Or is it possible I missed one nut ?

99% you missed "the secret one". Have you got Waynes book?

Case split as per Mr Dempsey's excellent book and some perseverance and choice words ! Next goal is to see if this engine's worth rebuilding or better off as parts fodder.
